Apache is a productive, upright-growing blackberry developed by the University of Arkansas. It produces large, glossy black berries with a sweet, rich flavor. The thornless canes make harvesting, pruning, and maintaining the plants much easier than thorny blackberry varieties.

Apache is a floricane-fruiting blackberry, meaning its berries are produced on second-year canes. It ripens later than many other Arkansas blackberry varieties, helping extend the fresh blackberry harvest.

North Florida Growing Note: Apache is recommended primarily for northern Florida. Because chilling-hour estimates vary and warm winters may reduce production, plant it in a sunny location with good air circulation. Lower-chill blackberries such as Natchez, Osage, or Ouachita may provide more consistent production following unusually mild winters.

Pruning Note: Apache produces fruit on second-year canes called floricanes. After a cane finishes fruiting, remove it at ground level. Keep the healthy new primocanes because they will produce the following year’s crop. Summer tipping encourages lateral branching and additional fruiting wood.

 Apache Rubus fruticosus 'Apache' PP11865 is a self pollinating jumbo sized fruit with a great flavor. The canes are erect and thornless. These berries ripen mid to late June. The Apache grows to about 8 feet high and spreads about 4 ft. Plant approximately 4 ft apart. It starts bearing fruit at 2 years old. This plant was introduced in 1999. It should be pruned back to approximately 3.5 ft to help avoid the need for support.
